The Mobile Darkroom

In the summer of 2017, members of the Knoxville Community Darkroom received funds through the Bailey Opportunity Grant and the Tennessee Arts Commission to purchase an enclosed cargo trailer and convert it into a mobile photo lab and workshop space.  The Mobile Darkroom includes not only a darkened space for developing photos, but also functions as a camera obscura.  When a sensitized material is added inside, such as photo paper, the Mobile Darkroom also functions as an ultra large format camera.

Conceptualized as a "vehicle" for teaching as well as an outreach tool to connect The Knoxville Community Darkroom with the burgeoning downtown arts scene in Knoxville, the project is often a first introduction to traditional processes for those who encounter it.  Additionally, the Mobile Darkroom allows for the opportunity to offer classes anywhere it can be towed, expanding arts education for both children and adults in the East Tennessee Region and beyond.
